Breaking the Cycle
Understanding
the Root Causes
of Crime & Violence
On September 11, 2025 I had the pleasure to speak at a public webinar exploring how systemic oppression, ACEs, historical trauma, and epigenetics contribute to cycles of crime and violence, and how trauma-informed approaches can foster healing and change.
Hosted by The Metropolitan Council of Community Mental Health Centers
Here’s what attendees shared:
“We live in one of the most violent and hyper segregated cities in the country, this is VERY important for our community.”
“I learned so much and it helped me understand how important being curious about these issues is.”
“It helped me begin to understand how early trauma affects someone’s entire life.”
When asked if they would recommend this talk, responses included:
✔ “Absolutely, opens our eyes to so much more.”
✔ “Yes! Great and easy to understand as well as thought-provoking.”
✔ “Absolutely, great information!”
